Your Guide to Buying a Baler for Your Farm

Bale Type

When choosing a baler, the first decision you’ll need to make is whether you prefer round or square bales. One machine can’t produce both types, so you will need to pick one. Typically, square bales are much more compressed, making them easier to store and stack. They’re also less likely to develop mold or hold moisture. On the other hand, round bales are easier to transport (as they can be rolled) and are easier to pull apart — making them easier for smaller animals to feed from.

Chamber Type

Typically, square balers only come with one type of chamber while round balers give you the choice of two: Fixed and variable. Variable chambers allow you to choose the size of your bales, giving you the option to create very compact or loose bundles. Fixed chambers on the other hand give you only one option and tend to produce less compressed bales. However, these chambers are less complex and are easier to repair and care for. 

Your Tractor 

Your baler will need to be connected to your tractor to function properly, and each model will require a certain level of horsepower from your machine. Before you select your new baler off the lot, ask your salesperson how much horsepower it will require from your tractor. If your tractor doesn’t have the necessary engine specs, you’ll need to choose something a bit smaller.
